Dear LCS community,
We have some highlights to share with you from our Tuesday, July 20, 2021 Lynchburg City School Board Work Session.
The School Board accepted a donation (books) from the Virginia (VA) Education Foundation. The VA Education Foundation provided books for elementary and middle school students by invitation based on low income and lunch program data. The organization donated approximately 23,113 books retailing at over $333,000.
The School Health Advisory Committee presented an overview of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The survey gathers information about health-related issues including physical activity, eating habits, personal safety, sexual behavior, mental health, alcohol and drug use. The survey was administered during the pandemic in the fall of the 2020 school year to students in eighth, tenth, and twelfth grades. After presenting the data, both strengths and opportunities for growth were shared. One of the strengths included strong parent, teacher, community, and social support for reducing violence, increasing safety, and providing extracurricular activities and community programs that support physical activity.
The School Board selected the firm Dominion 7 Architects of Lynchburg, VA to be awarded a contract for $400,000.00 to conduct the facility study. The Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) includes $400,000.00 in funding for a facility study to include a Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) of all school buildings and demographic study of the school division and the city.
