This is your Board Meeting Brief for the January 10th School Board Meeting.
To begin the meeting, a representative from accounting firm Brown Edwards presented their annual financial audit report to the school board. LCS received a clean, unmodified audit opinion, and overall, expenditures were under budget for the last fiscal year.
As a part of an update on the LCS Facilities Study, Deputy Superintendent for Operations & Strategic Planning, Dr. Reid Wodicka discussed the recent water damage that occurred at some schools over Winter Break.
Dr. Wodicka also announced that the consulting firm MGT of America has been selected to help assess the future educational needs of our school buildings as a part of the LCS Facilities Study. MGT is a national consulting firm which does education consulting work throughout the country.
Dr. Derrick Brown, Director of Student Services, also announced that LCS was awarded the federal School-Based Mental Health Services Grant through the Department of Education. The grant, which includes 8.4 million dollars over the next five years, will be used to increase the number of credentialed mental health providers to meet the needs of our students.
The Board also approved an update to the LCS Mission statement to add the words “and beyond.” The new mission statement for Lynchburg City Schools is now “Every Child, By Name and By Need, to Graduation and Beyond.”
A draft of the 2023-24 Middle School Program of Studies was presented to the Board by Samuel Coleman, Chief Academic Officer. Revisions from last year were minimal, and the School Board voted to approve the program of studies.
