This year, as in years past, some LAUREL students have the opportunity to work on skills within normalized community settings, depending upon the students’ individualized needs. Students may work on demonstrating appropriate social/behavioral skills in stores or restaurants. They may also work on shopping for items using a picture or word shopping list, paying for items at the cash register, or other skills determined by the teacher and student. Many students have also had the opportunity to choose and order their own lunches at both “fast food” and “sit down” restaurants.
Outings in the past year have included: walking trips to grocery stores and restaurants, walking trips to assist with activities at Lynchburg College DPT; bus trips to public libraries, shopping, lunch, and work activities at the YMCA and Lynchburg grows. We anticipate students participating in additional community outings during the 2017-2018 school year.
